JewelRiders

The Jewel Riders are the three eponymous main characters of Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders. The series' protagonist Princess Gwenevere (Starla) leads her fellow Jewel Riders, Fallon and Lady Tamara, serving Queen Anya under the wizard Merlin to protect the kingdom of Avalon from evil. The Jewel Riders were renamed as the Knights of Jewels (Chevaliers de Joyaux ) in French, as the Crystal Knights (Kristallritter) in German, the Knights of Avalon (Cavalieri di Avalon) in Italian, as the Jewel Sorceress (보석의 마법사들) in Korean, and as the Masters of the Stones (повелители камней) in Russian, as well as simply as the Riders in some other localizations (such as with the Polish Jeźdźcy or the Slovak Jazdci). Originally inspired by the titular Dragonriders from Dragonriders of Perm, they would later in turn inspire the mage protagonists of the reboot series Avalon: Web of Magic. They are to return in the upcoming Jewel Riders sequel comic.

The Jewel Riders are an elite team of teenage defenders of Avalon, tasked by Merlin with protecting this magical kingdom from evil and helping to maintain the harmony of magic for the good of all. They are paired with their animal special friends for the use of Enchanted Jewels that are bonding the girls with their magic animal mounts in the Circle of Friendship, giving them their Jewel Armor and various special powers unique to their jewels and personalities. The girls are to be the champions of Avalon, who may save the day when the kingdom needs them most. They are based in the Crystal Palace with their male partners known as the Pack.

JRAP

Now in the time of a great wild magic crisis caused by Anya's outlaw sister, Lady Kale, the future of Avalon is indeed in their hands. Together with the talking owl Archimedes on their Jewel Quest, the girls and their friends will need to use their magic and friendship to stop her from taking control of the Crown Jewels and its near unlimited power, and to save their wizard mentor and all of the kingdom. But the evil Lady Kale knows of their mission to ruin her plot to rule Avalon and so the novice Jewel Riders will have to deal with her already great magic in their adventures.

In the second season, after 1,000 years of imprisonment, the great dark wizard Morgana is back for vengeance. To prepare for her return, she sends the returning Kale to find the long-lost Wizard Jewels that the Jewel Riders will need to recover first while using their new powers and looking how to finally bring back Merlin to Avalon.

A thousand years ago, the great wizard Merlin found a set of special Enchanted Jewels which he assigned to teenagers and magic animals. For many generations, young people and their animals have felt the wonder and joy of receiving an Enchanted Jewel in Friendship Ring through the ceremony known as the Circle of Friendship. The girl who is chosen to become a Jewel Rider needs to bond with her animal. These Enchanted Jewels will allow them to communicate, and to live and work together as best friends. Belonging to the Jewel Riders means being part of a heroic group and channelling magic for good deeds. They are taught a code of ethics based on dedication and service.

Under the tutelage of Merlin, each animal/human team learned to tune their jewel to their own attributes and strengths, making the power of the jewel uniquely their own. Merlin taught the young people and their animal friends to use their Enchanted Jewels to ride the other-dimensional Wild Magic and monitor the lands, using Travel Trees to travel across the wild magic to other parts of the kingdom of Avalon with purpose to help protect it from evil. To deal with the unpredictable nature of the Wild Magic, protective clothing (the Jewel Armor) and equipment will be necessary on their fantastic journeys through the astral planes of the magical networks.

The group's current members of the Jewel Riders are three beautiful girls and their bonded unicorn special friends—the 16-year-old experienced warrior-scout Fallon (wielding the Moon Stone and riding Moondance), the 15-year-old novice healer Tamara (wielding the Heart Stone and later eventually riding Shadowsong), and their new leader, the 16-year-old Princess Gwenevere (wielding the Sun Stone and riding Sunstar), and its former members have included the currently reigning Queen Anya. They can also travel by the Crystal Carriage and by their ship named The Jewel of Avalon.

In the series' prologue, Merlin, now trapped somewhere within the Wild Magic, has instructed his best students, three teenage girls and their animal friends, on the great Jewel Quest. They are forced to use their unproven skills and the newly received Enchanted Jewels against the unstable wild magic and the even more dangerous dark powers of the evil sorceress Lady Kale, Anya's rogue sister and herself once a would-be Jewel Raider, whom they must defeat before she can steal all of the magic powers of Avalon from Merlin and keep them for herself. Now the skills and abilities of the Jewel Riders will be put to test and only they stand between the cruel witch and the total domination of Avalon.

Fallon vs Kale

As the series begins, Fallon and Tamara are already Jewel Riders, and they are soon joined by Gwen and Merlin's owl Archie on a mission to stop wild magic outbreaks and rescue Merlin. The Jewel Riders are going to travel the kingdom, looking for the Crown Jewels scattered throughout Avalon to tame their out-of-control powers so they can restore the balance to the magic. In doing so, they are going to have many adventures and accomplish many remarkable things, even without Merlin here to teach them. Relying on their friendship, the girls have to learn the secrets of magic to be able to prevent a terrible reign of darkness that would last forever. Their Enchanted Jewels may be no match for the witch's own Dark Stone, but their special bond with their animal friends and each other allows them to keep foiling Kale until they can reclaim enough Crown Jewels to bring her evil plans to an end.

Magical fight

For a short happy time, it seemed that peace has returned to Avalon thanks to the Jewel Riders, but very soon they find out that their troubles are far from over, and in fact it only got even worse now. Turns out that not only their continuous enemy, Lady Kale, has unexpectedly survived her would-be total defeat at the end of their earlier adventures, but they will have to face also the even greater threat—Merlin's arch-rival, the powerful wizard queen Morgana, who too is back for revenge along with Kale. And this time round, at the stakes is the fate of not just the kingdom of Avalon, but of the entire universe of magic and the many worlds and their inhabitants.

The Jewel Riders also learn they will need to search for the even more powerful Wizard Jewels before their enemies can get them, and so their new Jewel Quest begins. Advised by Queen Anya, the girls are going to need to master their new powers that are now much greater than before. They will have to make many new friendships and get even more magic, before they can have a chance to free Merlin at long last, and to put an end to the menace of Kale and Morgana once and for all.

In the comics[]

In the sequel comic, beginning some time after their victory over Morgana, "While the girls remain friends, things are not as they once were. Gwenevere - once the leader of the Jewel Riders - has had to take a step back from her true passion, being a Jewel Rider and protecting Avalon from evil, in order to step into a new role as the future queen. Fallon, holder of the Moon Stone now leads the Pack--an elite group of Avalon's protectors, a role once held by Gwen's fiance. Tamara trains under Merlin to better harness the power of her Heart Stone, but wonders where she - and her powers - truly belong. When Merlin begins acting oddly, it's a sign that evil Wild Magic has returned to the kingdom — and so has a foe the Jewel Riders thought they'd once vanquished. With her kingdom, friends, and magic on the line, Gwenevere must choose between the life she loves and knows as a Jewel Rider and her newfound duties."

Behind the scenes[]

Development[]

The concept of the Jewel Riders originates from the original project to adapt the book series Dragonriders of Pern as a television cartoon in the late 1980s to early 1990s. It was to feature the young Dragonriders pnamed Kara (an original character who would evolve into Gwen), Mirrim (proto-Fallon) and Menolly (proto-Tamara), a trio of "attractive and unique teenagers/young adults"—"female heroic characters that bond with intelligent and faithful dragons... for life." Together with a trio of male counterparts (who would become the show's Wolf Pack), they were to "interact with their dragons and each other in an intense Pernese 'prep school'."[1] The changes design changes underwent by the different Jewel Riders in various phases of the later production are discussed in their respective articles.

Legacy[]

Dark Mage

Emily, Kara and Adriane in the Avalon: Web of Magic novels

The three Jewel Riders inspired the protagonist characters in Avalon: Web of Magic: Kara (Gwen), Adriane (Fallon) and Emily (Tamara). The Jewel Riders-like magic users in Avalon are known as mages, defined as a "human user of magic who has at least one magic jewel and at least one bonded animal":

"A mage may be lucky enough to bond with a magical animal, developing a relationship that enhances the ability to use magic. Being befriended by one or more of these magical animals is a very special gift. Magical animals ground mages, giving them a balance to use magic properly. Once a connection is made, the bond remains forever."[2]

The fairy band Be*Tween is also (more loosely) based on the Jewel Riders. Even most of their songs (besides "Supernatural High" and "Golden") have been originally used in Jewel Riders.
