Magical Mobile

"Magical Mobile" collectible card

Grimm the dragon is a major villainous character in Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders. He is voiced by the late Peter Fernandez. In the Polish TV version, his name was changed to Szatan ("Satan").

Kale Wagon

Lady Kale in the Dragon Wagon

Unlike Tamara's gentle baby dragon Sugar, Grimm is one mean and ill-tempered beast. Capable of breathing blazing fire, he is a magic animal of the evil sorceress Lady Kale and is the only living being in the whole world that she actually cares for (very much unlike her other magic animals, the dweasels Rufus and Twig). Kale's vehicle of choice is the "Dragon Wagon" carried by Grimm across the skies of Avalon.

Official description[]

Grimm 01-02

Lady Kale's Dragon Wagon is powered by Grimm, the huge red winged dragon. Sneering and snorting, the dragon creates a dark, evil presence in the sky. Grimm transports Lady Kale to and from her castle in the Thornwoods. Unfortunately, Kale is always hot on the Jewel Riders' trail, thanks to Grimm's amazing speed and agility.

In the show[]

Grimm 1
Grimm Kale sketch

Grimm is usually seen carrying his evil mistress Lady Kale (whose Jewel Armor is dragon-themed) and her smaller magic-animal pets, the dweasels Rufus and Twig, in the Dragon Wagon. Grimm is faster than the unicorns of Merlin's good students, the Jewel Riders, however he is not as agile as Princess Gwenevere's flying unicorn Sunstar. He is also capable of blasting bursts of flame from his mouth on Kale's command, but she usually just will just fire blasts from the Dark Stone by herself even when in the Dragon Wagon.

Grimm 5
Kale Grimm sketch-0

Like Archie the owl, the dragon can talk on his own and not through a bonding magic jewel like the dweasels, but he is much less intelligent than even them and rarely says anything at all. Lady Kale and Grimm are very close to each other, and he is utterly loyal and completely devoted to her. Despite being usually very cold and haughty, Kale affectionately calls him her "big baby" as he calls her "Mum-mum".[1][2] And even as Grimm's "dragon breath" smells nasty (at least according to Fallon in her insult), Kale tells him she likes the way he smells.[3] She plans to rule Avalon together with him.

Second season[]

Shore

Grimm and Kale with her dweasels after their final defeat by Gwenevere

Between the events of the seasons one and two (between Lady Kale's defeat in "Full Circle" and before her return in "Morgana"), Rufus and Twig briefly relocate to the Dweasel Nook, taking Grimm and he lives with them during the brief time when Kale is gone. He then resumes his normal role, helping Kale in her fight against the Jewel Riders and their friends. He can also carry Morgana in addition to Kale (and the dweasels). His final appearance is in the show's next-to-last episode "Spirit of Avalon". Then, during the showdown at the Heart of Avalon, Princess Gwenevere uses the Staff of Avalon powered by the collected Wizard Jewels to magically turn Kale and Grimm, along with the dweasels, into crystal statues.

Behind the scenes[]

Development[]

Early Grimm

During the show's pre-production, Grimm (at first "Grim") used to have a goat-like beard and more twisted horns (as seen in the images here). His tongue's color was also changed repeatedly, from red to gray to violet, as was his blaze (from the original green-and-yellow), and his teeth were made smaller.[4] Grimm's Dragon Wagon was shown to be more crude-looking in some unrevised storyboard sketches.

Legacy[]

Dark Sorceress Adriane

The Manticore (upper side) in Avalon

In Avalon: Web of Magic, Grimm seemed inspired the characters of both the evil monster Manticore and the good red dragon Drake. The dragon Gwyx also has a somewhat similar name.
