Thornwoods is the foremost south-eastern section of the Great Forests, in a rocky mountainous valley bordering the Great Plains and the Burning Desert, full of evil magic, It is chiefly featured in "Jewel Quest, Part II", but thorn trees also grow "Travel Trees Can't Dance" and in the final two episodes of the first season "Revenge of the Dark Stone" and "Full Circle").

The area was once a beautiful woodland, but then became a foreboding, sunless forest devoid of animals or other life and instead full of thorn trees warped by Lady Kale's evil Dark Stone to guard her dark castle. Anyone who dares to enter Kale's lair must proceed with caution through a very dangerous maze territory where Kale will instantly know the location of any trespassers and will be able to have the thorn trees attack them. (A combined power of the Pack's Forest Stones and Fallon's Moon Stone allows them to fight their way through Thornwoods to Kale's hideout,) A normal Travel Tree ring is located on the edge of the dead Thornwoods.

Castle Thornwoods[]

Thornwoods

Castle Thornwoods is the gloomy residence of the evil Lady Kale, hidden deep within the giant maze of thorn trees. The witch has her sinister-looking throne in the courtyard (the interiors of its many twisted towers and turrets are never shown in the show). There, she plots to conquer Avalon while her enemies are kept away by moving walls of entangled thorns and the monstrous thorn trees animated by a mist of evil magic.

Castle Thornwoods is first featured in "Jewel Quest, Part II", where it gets heavily damaged by Kale's own Dark Stone as it goes out-of-control when she tries to destroy Merlin. The castle is then briefly revisited in the episode "Dreamfields" (in a dream scene) and in the second season's "Mystery Island" with Kale still living there as before.

Behind the scenes[]

Development[]

In an early script, thorn trees were to be crystal, similar to the activated Travel Trees, "hard and cold as black ice". The castle itself is described as "Gothic style".

Legacy[]

The Ravenwood appears in Avalon: Web of Magic as Ravenswood, however it only turns thorny when the party has to fight Emily towards the end of the series.
